CalGRIP Funded Projects (Region VI)

This is a list of local anti-gang projects funded by CalGRIP dollars.  The applicant agencies listed here were successful in a highly competitive Request-For-Proposal process.  CalGRIP allows for local jurisdictions to implement prevention, intervention or suppression activities – or a combination thereof – based on local need.  Cities and community-based organizations were eligible to apply.  Since the inception of the CalGRIP Initiative, three rounds of grant funding have been awarded (2008-09 - 2009-10 coming soon).  Projects are listed alphabetically.

FUNDED 2008-09


Able-Disabled Advocacy, Inc.

County: San Diego
Location of Services: San Diego
Grant Award: $500,000 (EDD)

Project Summary: Able-Disabled Advocacy will partner with the Local Workforce Investment Area, San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego Unified School District, Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention, the county Gang Suppression Unit and South County Career Center to deliver a comprehensive continuum of education, work-based learning and support to gang-affiliated youth 14-24 residing in the City of San Diego. Services include extensive personal, financial and career counseling, mentoring and universal access. Of the 64 enrolled over the 24 month period, 32 will be Younger Youth and 32 Older Youth. Of those, 30 will be Placed; 33 will Attain Credentials; and 40 will achieve Literacy/Numeracy Gains.

City of San Bernardino

County: San Bernardino
Implementing Agency: Mayor’s Office of Community Safety and Violence Prevention
Grant Award: $400,000

Project Summary: Through referrals from the highly successful Operation Phoenix Street Team, the San Bernardino City Operation Phoenix Collaborative will utilize (1) the evidence-based programs of the Urban Youth Conservation Corps to provide prevention, intervention, education training, skills development, community service and employment placement to 14-17 year old at-risk youth; and (2) Wraparound/Case Management services for 18-25 year old probationers and DJJ parolees to provide intervention, reentry, education, training, skills development, family services and employment placement in high-need areas of San Bernardino.

City of Oceanside

County: San Diego
Implementing Agency: Oceanside Police Department
Grant Award: $400,000

Project Summary: The Oceanside Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention Program (Oceanside GRIP) aims to reduce truancy and the risk of gang involvement for youth in the target area through a combination of prevention, intervention and suppression activities.  Through the Oceanside GRIP project, the Oceanside Police Department will increase truancy sweeps from 5 to 10 annually; expand its involvement in the truancy reduction program by adding a uniformed officer to contact high-risk truants and their parents; increase curfew sweeps from 4 to 8 annually; increase juvenile probation sweeps targeting high-risk probationers from 4 to 8 annually; and increase the case management capability of North County Lifeline (NCLL) to work with the youth and family members identified through the expanded truancy programs.

San Diego Imperial Labor Council

County: San Diego
Location of Services: South Los Angeles and Pico-Union
Grant Award: $500,000 (EDD)

Project Summary: The Gang Reduction Education And Training project will serve 70 youth at risk of gang involvement focusing in the geographic areas in San Diego that are most intensely associated with gang activity. The Labor Council will provide employer contextualized pre-employment soft skills and hard skills training. Youth will receive individualized case management to ensure their needs are addressed. The Labor Council will collaborate with a number of key agencies to provide not only job training but a holistic approach to serving the at-risk youth. Stipends and other incentives are built into this project to further support the youth in their pursuit of self-sufficiency. Employment opportunities in the fields of advanced manufacturing (shipbuilding) and hospitality with wages ranging from $9.50/hr to $27.67/hr.
