One important statewide anti-gang initiative is the California Cities Gang Prevention Network (13-City Gang Initiative).

California Cities Gang Prevention Network

The National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) and the National League of Cities’ Institute for Youth, Education and Families (YEF Institute) have initiated a network of 13 major cities in California to combat gang violence and victimization.  The California Cities Gang Prevention Network, the first of its kind in the nation, focuses on successful policies and practices that interweave prevention, intervention, enforcement and a community’s “moral voice” as an alternative to prison-only solutions.  Implemented in 2006 and led by the mayor’s office and law enforcement officials, participating cities assembled a five-member team of key stakeholders, such as representatives from probation and public health offices, schools, community-based organizations and the faith community.  The teams convene twice a year to develop, refine and implement comprehensive, locally appropriate action plans to prevent gang violence.  Participating cities include: Fresno, Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley), Oakland, Oxnard, Richmond, Sacramento, Salinas, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa and Stockton.
